Update - 13 Jan 2019

Hi all,

This week I worked in a few different areas:

Geometry:

• Perimeter and Area
• Squares

Expressing values:

• Scientific Notation 
• Estimation and Rounding 

Operations:

• Addition, Subtraction, and Variables - Practice Problems 

Accounting:

• Balance Sheet 

An entry I've been building to is the discovery of the value of pi - everyone knows the value 3.14, but how did people find out the value? We'll work it out this week. Another entry will be on the mathematician Euclid - the Father of Geometry. I'm hoping to get that done this week as well. I'll expand a bit on the balance sheet in the accounting section, and I anticipate getting into roots and logs also this week.

Hey everyone,

Wow - 2019 already! Time flies when you're having fun!

This past week I worked in several areas:

Math (Inequality; Addition, Subtraction, and Variables)
Graphing (X Y Axes)
Geometry (Intersecting, Parallel, Perpendicular Lines; Defining a Circle and Right Triangles)
Accounting (Accounting Reports)

Going forward, I'll continue to develop ideas along these paths.

Hey there everyone,

With this being the last day of the year, I thought I'd do my weekly update today.

This week I've worked in a few areas, including Math (Real Numbers, Variables), Geometry (Points, Line Segment, Line), and Accounting (Financial Entity, Comparability of Transactions). I also posted up an entry inviting help to come in - if there is an area where you'd like to contribute (whether writing material, editing, making a financial contribution, or simply liking and sharing, Would You Like to Help?) but felt like you needed an invitation - here it is!

Going forward, I'll continue to develop the section on transaction types with different numbers, accounting topics, geometry topics, and more.

I've opened a new Facebook group associated with Fact-orials at https://www.facebook.com/groups/Factorials- I'll be using it to put different learning paths to make accessing the material easier within Facebook.

I hope 2018 was wonderful and am hoping that 2019 is better.

Admin - weekly update 23 Dec 2018

Hello everyone,

This has been a great week, both in terms of posting up new material and in terms of exposure for the resource.

Let me talk about exposure first. After witnessing disaster after disaster with Facebook, I did a search for an alternative social media site... which I didn't find. But what I did find was a social media site dedicated to education - one that allows teachers, students, and parents to all be a part of. Schools use it to disseminate lesson plans and learning resources, home schoolers can use it to access the various learning apps and tools that are uploaded to it. And I have shared Fact-orials onto this site - Edmodo.com. Already I'm seeing an uptick in visitors to Fact-orials and I'm hoping I get some feedback from these potential users. I'm quite excited to be a part of edmodo and I hope Fact-orials helps students understand better various topics (primarily math right now but others in the future).

Speaking of math (and other topic) development, I finished working on the Order of Operations in terms of Integer operations. I realized that before I can finish the Rational Numbers, also for the Order of Operations, I had to introduce Irrational Numbers first, and so that has been done. I've also advanced Accounting Fact-orials with a couple of new entries. And lastly I got an entry in on Factorials when working with identical items within the population.

Looking forward to the next couple of weeks, I'll be introducing within Math Fact-orials real numbers, operations with variables, and finishing up operations with rational numbers. I'll also be  advancing Accounting Fact-orials to talk about different types of accounts.

I look forward to continuing to add entries to the resource and hope that users find it useful!

Admin - Weekly update 16 Dec 2018

Hello all,

This is the first of what will be now a weekly update as to the development of Fact-orials - where I've been and where I see things going.

Over the past week, I've focused on two areas: accounting (the development of double entry accounting) and combinatorics (permutations and factorials).

I anticipate over the coming week of continuing to develop the accounting area, the combinatorics area, finish transactions with integers and rational numbers, and introduce variables and associated operations (addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, exponentials).

Looking longer term, I'm looking to start geometry, physics, and other topics.

Admin - Fact-orials update

Hello everyone,

I'm very happy to say that I've got 60 entries done and posted in the Fact-orials resource and that number is (slowly) growing.

Basic fraction and decimal operations are now covered and I'll be expanding into exponential operations for more general sets of numbers (rational and real numbers).

Inspired by a recent news story concerning a paper on super permutations (where an author on the paper is an anonymous user from the 4chan website), I'll be spending a bit of time talking about combinatorics.

I've also started plans to bring accounting into Fact-orials - something I've been intending to do for a long time and I think the time is ready to start writing that alongside more mathematics, such as sets, geometry, variable operations, and the use of fractions in such things as ratios and rates.

I also hope to start talking about more esoteric subjects such as Tarot, astrology, and numerology - these topics are just as much part of the human experience as the hard sciences (and in many ways more so).

I hope that as Fact-orials grows, its usefulness as a go-to resource will increase.

Hey all,

The build for Whole Number and Integer arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of positive and negative counting numbers) is now up and running! (You can find those posts, plus others, by either going through the Index link on the upper right, or going through the blue button which sits a bit lower).

If you or someone in your life is having trouble understanding how to do those types of operations (or want to know what they are), please swing by and take a look. And while there, please do let me know in the comments section about your experience and if you've found Fact-orials helpful.

The next big topic is Fractions and Decimals (aka Rational Numbers) - what are they, what do they mean, how to use a number line with them, plus using them in operations (adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division) and more. There's a lot to cover when we hit Rational Numbers!

(This will also open up the set of numbers that aren't rational - Irrational numbers - and that will lead to talking about numbers like pi and that will lead to topics in geometry).

Admin update

Hey all,

While the content build on Fact-orials has been slower than I'd originally hoped, a lot of time and attention has been given to make it look great and work the way I'd like it to. I'm very pleased with what I have so far and I hope people looking for information will find the same.

Going through the final touches are Whole Number arithmetic operations (and so multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting numbers that are normal, everyday numbers like 0, 1, 2, 3, etc) and I'll be expanding those into negative numbers (whole numbers that have a negative sign in front of them, which are known as "integers") and also fractions (integers that are divided by other non-zero integers, known as "rational numbers") in the coming days.

Further down the road, I have plans to expand into geometry (exploring concepts like area and perimeter of different shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and circles) and set theory (including the well-known concept of Venn Diagrams). I also have my eye on expanding into accounting subjects (the debiting and crediting of assets, liabilities, equity accounts). And also with a bit more math built in, moving into physics and astronomy.

It's my hope that this resource will help show the interconnections between different subjects and can also help people better understand what they're being taught (or were taught) in terms of more basic ideas that might have been forgotten (or never covered!).
